Transit routes in Hungary

January 23rd

With the start of the new year, the international transit regime for goods in Hungary has undergone a significant change. The competent authorities have introduced new rules requiring hauliers to use specific road corridors when crossing national territory, from the point of entry to the exit border.

The permitted routes are indicated in an official map identifying the roads on which heavy goods vehicles are authorized to circulate. This initiative has been adopted with the aim of containing environmental impact, limiting noise pollution, and increasing safety in areas with higher population density, in line with Hungarian legislation on road transport and road network management.

To ensure the enforcement of the new provisions, the authorities have announced an intensification of inspection activities throughout the territory. According to information communicated by the IRU, with reference to guidance provided by the MKFE (the Hungarian Road Transport Association), the restrictions apply to vehicles with a gross vehicle weight exceeding 20 tonnes.

However, deviations from the authorized routes are permitted in specific cases, for example to reach loading or unloading points related to a particular transport operation, or to access rest areas designated for mandatory rest periods. Such deviations are allowed only insofar as they do not involve transit through residential areas.
